PS3 Errors and Fix – Easy Guide

Here is a quick guide on PS3 Problems, Diagnosis and Repair Instructions

No Ps3 Problems Diagnosis How to Repair
1 Flashing Yellow Light The “yellow light of death” (YLOD) occurs after a major hardware failure. Many people suspect that 9/10 YLODs result from bad solder joints on the motherboard, while 1/10 result from power supply malfunction Try these. 1. Check if there’s a loose cable, if not, restart your console.2. Unplug all cables except the power cord, and plug them back in. 3. Update Firmware.4. Fix Motherbord or Power Supply Unit. 5. Fix Hard Drive. Refer PS3 Yellow Light Fix post
2 Flashing Red Light The “red light of death” occurs after a major Hard Drive failure. This is different from the YLOD, as the YLOD refers to a problem with motherboard Try these. 1. Check if there’s a loose cable, if not, restart your console.2. Unplug all cables except the power cord, and plug them back in. 3. Update Firmware 4. Fix Hard Drive 5. Fix motherboard. Refer PS3 blinking Red Light Fix post
3 Red Light Turning Yellow Problems could be with either Motherboard or hard drive CPU or GPU problem. Refer Red Light Turning Yellow fix
4 Ps3 Freezing Was your Playstation 3 hot when the freezes happened? Or it could be with dust clinging on the game discs or Not enough hard drive space Try to cool it down by putting your ps3 off. This actually might solve the freezing problems. Check Game Disc , wipe with real soft cloth. Ensure 50% free hard drive space. Refer PS3 Freezing post
5 Ps3 Hard Drive Problems Problems with your PS3 hard drive Remove Hard Drive and power on. If you still see the yellow light blinking, then your hard drive has no problems. Refer How to Fix Hard Drive post. Also read How to Get Save Data Off PS3 Hard Drive
6 3 Beeps ,3 Beeps and Flashing Red Light Again this happens when PS3 is overheated. Or when you eject when there’s no game disc inside, or eject when the game is running, or you switch off the TV before PS3 shuts off etc.. Allow PS3 to cool down, and then try to turn it on . Refer How to Get Stuck Disc Out , Blinking Red Light posts
7 Stuck Disc Game disc stuck inside and won’t eject if you press ‘Eject’ button Turn off PS3 from back. Put your finger on the eject button and once you do, push the switch at the back to switch the PS3 on, and then push the eject button. Hold it like this for 15 seconds, or until the drive is forced open. Refer How to Get Stuck Disc Out
8 Blue-ray Disc If the Blu-Ray is not working on your PS3, then it is simply broken Do this first, try cleaning the lens, and if it doesn’t work, then you will need to replace the entire drive
9 Flashing Green Light Firstly, it could be an issue with the HDD software, or the firmware itself, or it could be a simple fix as turning off the PS3 and resetting Do Reset, by turning off and then turn on. Or Update the Firmware. Refer Update Firmware post (instructions to update firmware at the end of post)
10 Firmware Issues When you turn off the PS3, while the HDD indicator light is flashing, might cause corruption. Or a game may be corrupted. Or your new firmware may be causing a YLOD. Go to the Recovery menu by turning on (you can hear 2 beeps) and restore default settings. Refer Update Firmware post

The YLOD cannot be fixed by you unless you know exactly what you’re doing ! Game consoles and PCs have some very nasty stuff inside them like Mercury and you have to know what you’re doing, in order to fix it all by yourself ! Sony charges $150 + S&H for repairs . Also keep in mind that you will lose all saved data on your HDD unless you use the PS3’s Backup Utility feature.

Recently, one of my reader mailed me these questions.

1. If I take my ps3 hard drive out and put back in, will I lose all my game saves????

2. If I reformat the ps3 hard drive, will this resolve my yellow light of death?

The first question is very similar to a situation like you removing a hard drive from PC…just simply unplugging and putting back the drive in, definitely will not erase the data in the hard drive. So, the answer is No…You will still have all your game saves on the hard drive if you only attempt to unplug and plug back the PS3 hard drive. But keep in mind that improper removal or installation of a HDD may cause damage to your PS3 system or loss of data, and may void your PS3 hardware warranty.

So I would suggest you to refer to a good repair guide like PS3 Lights Fix by Rob Sheffield for instructions on how to reinstall your ps3 hard drive. It is recommended that you regularly back up any data on the HDD that is of a type that can be backed up. If for any reason software or data loss or corruption occurs, it may not be possible to restore or repair the software or data.

The second question needs little more explanation.

YLODs in PS3 or Yellow Light of Death in general are caused by major hardware failure. The “red light of death” occurs after a major Hard Drive failure.

So probably your hard drive too might be causing a red/yellow light of death on PS3, hence by removing the PS3 hard drive and turning on the PS3, you can very well find out if your hard drive is faulty and causing the YLOD

If the Yellow/Red Light still displays even after turning on the PS3 with the HDD out, then you can be sure that it isn’t the hard drive. If it doesn’t display any Yellow/Red Lights then it’s the hard drive.
If the hard drive is the problem, then three main reasons could be,

1.Faulty (e.g. broken)

2. Corrupted (e.g. data/firmware issues)

Go to the Recovery menu by turning on (you can hear 2 beeps) and restore default settings.

3. Hasn’t been formatted to FAT32 (if you installed a new HDD)

After doing this, you are going to need software that has the ability to read PS3 hard drive. I personally recommend SwissKnife, This application has the ability to format PS3 HDD’s properly. (If you are using Vista as opposed to XP you will need to download FAT32FORMAT instead of Swissknife since it won’t work with Vista) Once the software is installed, format the HDD to FAT32 (NTFS is not for PS3’s, but for PC’s). Format the ENTIRE HDD and ONLY in FAT32. Remember to select your PS3 HDD.

If windows is not reading your hdd out of your ps3 then right click on my computer and go into management. assign the drive a letter and reformat it from there, then windows will read it.

So to sum it up, if you reformat or replace your HDD…you may be able to resolve the yellow light issue, if the problems are either faulty hard drive, corrupted data or firmware issues or a hard drive that needs formatting.
